The race for the Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees District 1 seat will go to a second recount after the results came back in a tie.

A final unofficial report was released Friday night by the Lubbock County Elections Office, indicating that candidates Mario Ybarra and Lala Oralia Chavez had tied with 747 votes each.

After the first report was released on May 7, Ybarra had a two-vote lead. Following a recount, the candidates were tied.

EverythingLubbock.com reached out to both candidates for comment late Friday evening.

According to Chavez, the tie means that another recount will take place. After that recount, if the results come back with a tie, a new election would take place, or the candidates could agree to a coin flip.

Ybarra had not yet returned our call Friday night.

Chavez said she would continue to fight for the District 1 seat.
