According to the Dallas Morning News (DMN), a donor pledged $9 million to Planned Parenthood to construct two health centers in West Texas. The idea is to replace two Planned Parenthood centers in San Angelo and Midland that closed in 2013.
The name of the donor was not made public. DMN said it has not been determined if the two clinics will be abortion providers.
“Besides the $9-million-dollar gift, a separate donor has committed $800,000,” the DMN reported. “The construction timeline and specific locations of the two centers have not been determined.”
Six Planned Parenthood locations in Texas offer abortions. The others do not.
The Lubbock Planned Parenthood facility was taken over in late 2013 by Generation Healthcare in what was described as “asset transfer” rather than a buyout.
Generation Healthcare at the time said no abortions would be performed. That clinic has since closed due to funding. Aside from the asset transfer, Generation Healthcare was not associated with Planned Parenthood.
It was an uphill start for the clinic near 67th Street and Indiana Avenue.
An official statement at the time said, “Generation … was required to assume approximately $250,000 of Planned Parenthood debt secured by the [67th Street] facility.”
The cost of renovations brought the total to $400,000.
A Texas law in 2011 cut off funding to health care providers that were associated with abortion.
