The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality opened an investigation Thursday related to open sewage on the streets of Levelland.

Someone called TCEQ on Tuesday with a complaint.  On Wednesday KAMC News video showed open sewage including used tampons and used toilet paper on the streets near 11th Street and Avenue N.  The city was using sand and chlorine pellets in an attempt to subdue the smell.

City Manager Rick Osuburn said heavy rain and tree roots caused sewage to overflow from the sewer main, and it come up from a manhole onto the residential street.

TCEQ said, “The region investigator will be conducting visual observations, and obtaining information from the City, to determine the cause and extent of the overflow, and will also evaluate corrective actions that the City has taken to date and will take to address the overflow from the manhole.”

TCEQ also said, “Once the investigation has been completed and an investigation report finalized, a copy can be provided.  It is anticipated that the report will be available in 30 to 45 days.”
