Senator Ted Cruz (R – Texas) arrived in Lubbock Sunday afternoon and then headed to Ropesville for a tour of Dahlen K. Hancock’s cotton farm. A release sent out Thursday about the tour explained that during the tour the senator would “discuss issues affecting Texas’ cotton industry.”
Mr. Cruz met with several West Texas cotton producers at the farm, as well as leaders with Plains Cotton Growers. These cotton growers expressed to EverythingLubbock.com that they were excited to have the opportunity to educate the senator about what goes into West Texas cotton production.
“We appreciate Senator Cruz and his staff for taking the time to come to the Texas High Plains and visit with our growers and agricultural industry leaders,” PCG Executive Vice President Steve Verett said. “We have some significant challenges and opportunities, particularly in the cotton industry, and we look forward to working with Senator Cruz as we face those.”
Some of the cotton crops Cruz toured Sunday will be ready for harvest within the next week. The producers said this a fitting time for the senator to learn about the policies and variables that impact South Plains cotton farmers.
Although the media was invited to speak with Senator Cruz after his tour of the cotton farm, Sunday morning that media availability was canceled. Cruz’s team said his schedule would be too tight to allow for any interviews.
A spokesperson added that Senator Cruz would be staying in West Texas to watch the second presidential debate Sunday night.
