Today was a big day for athletes but also for the students signing their letters of intent to continue their careers in the classroom after graduation. Lamesa High School’s 2017 graduating class had 92 out of 102 seniors sign for college.
“It was beneficial to celebrate our kids and their accomplishments,” said Chris Riggins, the Principal at Lamesa High.
The ceremony welcomed both parents and underclassmen to come and watch the signing ceremony. Some administrators say this celebration makes the younger students want to achieve the same.
“They are actually seeing our seniors sign. Then you hear kids in the hallway start saying ‘hey I am going to be signing next year,”’ said Moses Pena, the College Liaison at Lamesa High.
The ceremony also hosted seven speakers, all alumni from Lamesa High, who are now attending college in the Texas area.
“But it’s even better to see them come back and share their stories on what they are doing,” said Riggins.
