WHAT:
Texas Tech University will host a forum titled “Speaking Freely: The Need for Opinion Diversity” featuring experts from various academic disciplines across campus and open discussion of the topic.

EVENTS:
A panel discussion will be held regarding the need for tolerance and diversity of opinions on various post-presidential inauguration issues regarding government and media relations, public access to information controlled by federal agencies and more.
Several campus experts will discuss the need for tolerance and diversity of opinions at a time of hyper-partisanship and polarized viewpoints. Universities’ responsibilities in safeguarding academic freedom and engaging in thoughtful, respectful dialogue will be highlighted.
This inaugural event is part of the Civil Counterpoints initiative, which originated among faculty members from the College of Media & Communication, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources and the Honors College.
The panel will be hosted by Erik Bucy, the Formby Professor of Strategic Communication in the College of Media & Communication, with introductions by Jorge Iber, associate dean in the College of Arts & Sciences. Invited speakers include:
- Sean Cunningham, chairman of the Department of History
- Katie Langford, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies
- Rick Rosen, interim dean of the Texas Tech School of Law
The event is free and open to the public.
