An equipment failure at the McDonald Substation at approximately 2:00 a.m. Monday interrupted service for thousands of Lubbock Power and Light customers. The substation is located on Milwaukee Avenue between 4th and 19th Streets. Utility crews are currently working to fix the issue. The cause of the equipment failure is currently unknown.

Initially 7,700 customers lost power. Currently 2,000 remain without service. Crews anticipate that the majority of remaining customers could have power restored by 6:30 a.m. Crews will remain on scene until every customer has service restored and will continue to work to determine the cause of the equipment failure.

Lubbock Police Officers are directing traffic at five intersections where traffic lights are down. The affected intersection are Milwaukee and Canyon West entrance, 43rd and Milwaukee, 34th and Milwaukee, 19th and Milwaukee, 19th and Iola. Drivers are encouraged to avoid these intersections if possible and to use caution if driving in the affected area.
