The No. 4 Texas Tech baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to UT-Arlington on Tuesday night at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

The Red Raiders (14-4) were held to just two hits, scoring one run in the third, in their first midweek loss of the season. The Mavericks (9-8) tallied three runs in the second frame, followed by one in the fifth an eighth for the 5-1 marker.

Junior infielder Michael Davis and freshman catcher Michael Berglund were the only two Red Raiders to record hits against the Mavericks. Davis’ was an RBI single, while Berglund smacked a triple in the seventh inning, both coming with two outs.

Freshman right-hander John Henry Gonzalez started his fourth game of the year, both went only 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out another. Tech used six relievers to fill out the final six frames, as junior lefty Jacob Patterson and freshman right-hander Caleb Freeman each struck out two batters.

The Mavericks got on the board first in the top of the second, as a single to right field by Olson and a walk to Rohrbaugh put two on with no out. The next two hits from UTA came on the first pitch of the at-bats, as Vaughan hit a double off the top of the right field wall, plating two Mavericks. Minjarez followed with a single through the right side of the infield, moving Vaughan over to third and was scored by a balk to make it 3-0.

The Red Raiders answered in the top of the third, as junior infielder Orlando Garcia began the frame with a four-pitch walk. A wild pitch moved him over to second, which allowed a single through the left side of the field from Davis to score him to cut into the deficit at 3-1.

After 2.0 innings from sophomore Erikson Lanning in relief, Tech turned to sophomore righty Ty Harpenau, who allowed a four-pitch walk and an RBI double to right-center field to make it 4-1.

The Mavericks put up their fifth run of the night in the eight inning, after a leadoff walk & stolen base by Williams from Freeman gave UTA a runner in scoring position with two outs. A single up the middle by Salinas brought in Williams to push UTA’s score to its final total at 5-1.

The Red Raiders continue their spring break road trip with a weekend series in Austin, opening up conference action against No. 21 Texas on March 17-19 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
