Lubbock Police reported a car crashed into a house on the corner of 82nd Street and Chicago Avenue Saturday at 10:17 a.m.
“There was a boom, it sounded like a bomb or something,” Resident Rorana Smith said.
Smith, her three daughters, their significant others, and three grandchildren were all in the house at the time of the crash.
“The china cabinet came down, everything, the wall,” Smith said. “We didn’t know what happened. All we saw was just smoke coming out.”
Lubbock Police told KLBK News and EverythingLubbock.com that a 76-year-old man was driving his suburban westbound on 82nd Street approaching the intersection of Chicago Avenue.
While attempting to turn south onto Chicago, he failed to yield to another vehicle and collided into the car.
Police said it is possible the driver accelerated instead of hitting the break petal when hitting the other car. This sent his vehicle launching into the Smith’s dinning room.
“The baby, thank god, he was five seconds in that area by the dining area,” Smith said. “He just passed through that area when everything came crashing down.”
Lubbock Police and two Lubbock Fire Rescue trucks both responded to the scene. They report no injuries from this crash.
“We are completely shook up, hysterics, everyone was screaming,” Smith said. “Babies were running and crying but as far as I know no one was physically injured.”
Smith said officials have deemed this house unlivable at this time.
“We have been told they’re not going to be able to live here for at least 3 months or more, depending on how long it takes to get the structure fixed,” Smith said. “Because it does have structure damaged which was also impeding the electricity. So electricity has been turned off.”
Smith added they’re currently working out arrangements for another place to live.
