Last week the Lubbock City Council approved Tom and Shawna Larson’s request for a change to the zoning ordinance, so they could open an indoor gun range on the 4200 block of Huron.
The Larson’s bought the old Trane warehouse and plan to convert the 43,000 square foot building into an 18 lane indoor shooting range and 4,000 square foot gun accessory retail space. The range will be called Lone Star Shooting Sports.
“We’ve been working on this for a couple of years,” Tom Larson said. “And really, location has been the biggest hurdle. I’ve almost tried to force it into a few places and I am really glad we didn’t.”
Lubbock has four other gun ranges but Larson said his will cater to more specific and updated needs of customers.
“We think that we can do something a little bit newer, nicer, more modern than what is out there,” Larson said.
In 2016, state officials reported 4,999 new concealed handgun license applications in Lubbock County.
“There are very few places that offer advanced training, basic training and we just want to afford people that opportunity,” Larson said.
Larson said he expects women to make up more than 40% of his business. He wants Lone Star Shooting Sports to be an entertainment ‘destination.’ He said the range aims to host ladies nights, bachelor parties, corporate events and team building.
Although entertainment is important, Larson put a strong emphasis on safety.
