The Lubbock Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred last night [Thursday night] shortly before 8 p.m. in the 1600 block of 58th Street.
When officers arrived, they found 28-year-old Yvette Ellis deceased inside the home. Her boyfriend, 44-year-old Juan Gallardo, was taken into custody for questioning and has now been arrested and charged with manslaughter.
Through the initial investigation it appears there was a verbal argument between Ellis and Gallardo. A firearm was brought out and the two began to struggle over the firearm. During the struggle, the firearm discharged once and Ellis was struck and killed.
Gallardo called 911 to report the shooting and has been cooperative with police.
Two small children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Child\ Protective Services took custody of the children and are working to place them in a family member’s home.
This is an ongoing investigation, and homicide detectives are currently in the process of examining statements and processing the evidence collected from the scene.
