With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, Lubbock Fire Rescue encouraged people on Wednesday to consider the weather and dry conditions before launching fireworks over the holiday weekend.
“The county units do make a lot more calls during those times [New Year’s] but we do have some in the city as well,” Division Chief Steve Holland said, “People break the law and bring fireworks into the city and shoot them off.”
TNT Store Manager Joseph Stewart said a lot of regular customers come in to buy fireworks before holiday weekends, but he stressed the importance of safety to them.
“People come in with a cigarette, and I tell them no, you can’t come in unless you put it out. We’ve got all our exits marked and meeting places across the highway to account for everyone in case of a fire.”
While foregoing the fireworks this New Year’s Eve might not be the most enjoyable decision for firework fanatics, it could prevent fires and possibly even save lives.
“We have to think about not only our own safety, but the safety of all those around us,” Holland said, “And sometimes not shooting the fireworks in this type of weather and conditions is the appropriate thing to do.”
For those who decided to take the risk, the Chief offered a few tips.
“If you have a safe place to shoot them off outside of Lubbock county lines, be aware of all the fire safety rules…you’re probably going to be on someone’s land or along a county road, so please pick up your trash and do the due diligence to those land owners and the citizens of Lubbock County.”
Stewart also offered advice to his customers, suggesting that they watch the wind and have a small fire extinguisher if they want to be extra cautious.
