Following the vandalism of fifteen tombstones found on Christmas Day, City of Lubbock cemetery workers returned to work on Tuesday to meet with Lubbock Police and discuss the investigation involving the damage.
Lubbock Cemetery Director, Jaime Coy, said he is in the process of getting quotes on surveillance cameras that he hopes to have placed throughout the property in order to tighten security. Coy said unfortunately the cemetery has seen this before, when they had twenty two stones vandalized a few years back.
“Whoever did this, it was intentional whether they used their foot, fists or hammers,” Coy said. “They crumbled some of them back there, and they think that’s fun.”
For the family members that are out of state, the cemetery has been sending pictures via text to let them assess the damage. Emma Touchet said she has nearly ten relatives buried in the cemetery, and she discovered her great grandmother’s tombstone crumbled in pieces.
“I came to check on my relatives to see if their headstones were all here but I found my great grandmother’s stone knocked over, all broken up,” Touchet said. “The stone her sons had made for her, she’s been gone a long time.. it’s a shame.”
Lubbock Police are asking that if anyone was at the cemetery on Christmas Eve, or has any information about the incident to call Crime Line at: 806-741-1000.
