New data from the CDC showed drug overdose deaths jumped 23 percent between 2010 and 2014. Opioids such as heroin, oxycodone, and morphine were among the drugs most frequently linked to overdose deaths, with fentanyl related fatalities doubling in a single year.  Alcohol played a role in up to nearly a quarter of those deaths. 
 
A new study found nutritional guidelines restricting sugar intake are not based on quality science. Canadian researchers said nine public health guidelines did not meet the criteria for trustworthy recommendations. Doctors said limited sugar consumption is still advisable but new research is needed regarding exact amounts.
 
There’s a possible breakthrough when it comes to Alzheimer’s. British researchers said a new class of drug tested on lab mice not only improved cognitive decline but also extended the lifespan of terminally-ill mice.
