Two people have died on the South Plains this week and a third is in serious condition after they were all involved in separate car accidents. All of the drivers were ejected from their vehicles. None of them were wearing seatbelts.

“The signal lamp is there for a reason,” Sergeant John Gonzalez said. “The horn is there for a reason. The seatbelts are there for a reason.”

In Texas, it is against the state law to not wear a seatbelt while in the car, no matter where a person is riding or how old they are.

“I’d much rather give you a citation,” Sgt. Gonzalez said. “And encourage you to wear your seatbelt than again to have to go tell your loved ones that you’re not coming home because you just weren’t wearing your seatbelt.”

Millions of Americans travel by roadway each holiday season. With the increased amount of cars on the road along with bad weather, Sgt. Gonzalez said it is important for drivers to slow down, do not drink and drive and to always wear a seatbelt.
