The City of Lubbock will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the East Erskine Street Paving Project on Monday, November 14th. The ceremony will start at 2:00 p.m. and be held at George Woods Park located at the intersection of East Erskine Street and North Zenith Avenue.
The majority of East Erskine Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Loop 289 was a dirt road prior to construction. The upgraded roadway will improve connectivity and opens the opportunity for additional development in the area.
The project was funded through the Gateway Streets Funding Program. The City Council established this program in 2004 to open areas of the City for development through the construction of new thoroughfares.
The City Council awarded the construction contract for East Erskine Street in November of 2015. In all, five city departments (Streets Engineering, Water Engineering, Storm Water Engineering, Lubbock Power and Light, and Parks) coordinated with each other and the contractor to facilitate the timely and under-budget construction of the project. Construction began in March of 2016, and crews finished the project in October of 2016.
