Texas Tech’s junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been the same since his shoulder injury against Kansas, but in more areas than just one.
He either can’t or isn’t making the same throws we’re accustomed to seeing, and even according to him, his footwork has been sloppy in the pocket.
However, he hasn’t been given much help, from an offensive line that’s in shambles.
Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury admitted at Monday’s press conference that his offensive line is having trouble with three and four man pressure.
They’re ranked eighth in the Big 12 in sacks against, giving up 2.67 per game, and they’ve already given up 24 on the year.
Understandably, leading Mahomes to be gun-shy in the pocket.
“Survival mode kicks in. But to be a great player, you keep standing in there and trust it. When you’ve got to get out, you’ve got to get out. But we’re still working through that,” Kingsbury said. “I’ve played the position. I’ve been through that situation. It’s not fun. He’s getting out, trying to preserve himself at times.”
“He definitely understands. He’s been in my position. He’s played quarterback here and he knows what happens as a quarterback and when you need to get out and when not to,” Mahomes said. “But at the same time he says there are times when he understands when I can get out and he says there are times I need
to sit in there longer and go through my reads longer.”
