In the Opinions section of Sunday’s edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the newspaper’s editorial board announced their endorsement of Donald J. Trump for President.

The statement read in part:

“As we near the end of a very tumultuous election season, Americans have a very difficult decision to make. Some are not happy with either of their choices, but decide we must. Despite his unorthodox campaign, the Avalanche-Journal feels that Donald Trump is conservative Lubbock’s best choice.”

The editorial board’s reasons for endorsing Trump included his demeanor, his ability to relate to the “everyman,” and his stance on issues including trade and border security.

It appears that this newspaper endorsement is the largest endorsement from any paper in Texas so far. Prior to this endorsement, the next largest Texas paper to endorse Trump was the Waxahachie Daily Light.

Sunday Patrick Svitek with the Texas Tribune tweeted the following:

The Lubbock Avalanche Journal is owned by Morris Communications based out of Augusta, GA. Morris Communications has a statement on its website explaining that all of its newspapers will air an endorsement of Trump on November 6.

The statement reads in part:

“Morris is a third generation, family-owned company. We hold traditional values and have long-held conservative views that we believe have been key components in making this country a world leader.

While this endorsement reflects our opinion, we want readers to know that this does not influence our news coverage. Newsrooms run independently from our editorial pages.”
