With the colder weather approaching, the homeless community is eager to find shelter in Lubbock.
KLBK and EverythingLubbock.com called every shelter in town and as of November 2, every one is at full capacity for beds.
Paul’s Project at Grace Campus said they have two spots that will be available soon.
“Last year we didn’t have this many people,” Grace Campus Executive Director Chris Moore said. “It’s a daily thing. We’re getting like four or five people every day looking for shelter. Sometimes more than that. It’s really strange because yeah, last year wasn’t like this at all.”
Lubbock Police Homeless Outreach Team suggest the beginning of winter months sparked an urgency in parts of the homeless community.
“As it gets cooler out and maybe the weather’s changing, people are finding the need or the urge to get into housing,” LPD’s Sergeant Eric Quijada said. “So they want to take that step and accept that help that’s out there. So they’re more eager to get into these housing that are offering a roof over their head.”
Sergeant Quijada said that this trend will probably increase, and soon there won’t be many other options left.
“Well there’s really not much other than Grace Campus and Salvation Army,” Sergeant Quijada said. “When it gets really cold below freezing both places, Salvation Army and Grace Campus will open their doors and they’ll place cots on the floors and they’ll get as many people as they can inside.”
