The Lubbock City Council on Thursday will vote on a project to improve 50th Street between Milwaukee Avenue and Upland Avenue.  The initial money set aside for the project is $1.154 million.

Thursday would be the second and final reading of the ordinance in order to gain approval.

Most of the money will come from the leftover funding of a project along 98th Street.

The city has already acquired a permit to build a railroad crossing along the west side of Milwaukee Avenue at 50th Street.

The project would still need a small stretch of property to be dedicated by a private developer.  The city also said there would be a meeting with neighbors to go over the plans and any questions people might have.

Most of the roadway, previously known as County Road 6900, was previously established as a roadway with 150-foot right-of-way.   That would be enough room for seven lanes, but the city’s plan is for three lanes.

The city said a traffic light would probably be needed at 50th and Milwaukee.  The earliest timetable would be 12 to 24 months.
