It’s no secret that Texas Tech’s defense has long been their Achilles heel.

Over the last five seasons their have turned in an average total defensive ranking of 99th nationally.

The encouraging news is that each of those seasons featured a new defensive coordinator.

In David Gibbs first year as Texas Tech defensive coordinator, his defense was ravaged.

His unit allowed an average of 42 points, and 540 yards of offense per game.

There aren’t expectations for this defense to see giant leaps of improvement in 2016, but hopes that continuity will at least bring incremental improvement.

“We’re going to be a young defense. I think we’re going to have more depth up front. Which a year ago we didn’t have any depth,” Gibbs said. “We had good guys last year, but when they are playing 80-85 plays a game last year you can’t function at that level. So hopefully we put a better product out there on the field.”

As you know, he keeps everything pretty close to the vest. I know how I feel about it, but he likes to tend to downplay things,” Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. “But I think it will be a group that understands his schemes better. I think it will be a group that can play hard. I think we’ll be more physical up front due to some of the size that we’ve picked up. So that’s exciting. We’ll find out what we’ve got Saturday. But I do think we all feel like it will be an improved group.”
