Lubbock ISD has a standard list of school supplies for their elementary, middle, and high schools. For the 2016-2017 academic year, the requirement for second graders is nearing $100.

Fourteen items are required for second graders on the first day of class. According to Target prices, it adds up to $86.15 for basic items, not including tax.

This amount doesn’t included other back to school necessities like backpacks, lunch boxes, clothes, and shoes.

“They want that unique item and as parents you want to get that best deal so it’s always good to go to a place where you can not only get saving but a good variety also,” Lubbock United Assistant Store Director Kyle Elliott said.

Elliott said United stores prepare for back to school shopping by keeping up with the latest trends and making sure they’re fully stocked.

“Because of the added things on the list it does become quite expensive so using our rewards card here at United, and using the kids club and all of that. And getting the weekly discounts and through emails really helps out,” Elliott said.

United Supermarkets said they offer rewards points and a Kids Club through their membership for customers.

Another way to save on costs is through standardized dress, according to Atkins Middle School Principal Chris Huber.

“We showed parents they can go to the mall and they could spend as much money or as little money as they would like,” Huber said.

Huber said during the first year of required uniforms, parents were reluctant and then eventually began to like them.

“With standardized dress, it kind of limits the desire for those logos and it helps families say we’re not going to do all of that,” Huber said.
