Every year more than 50-million Americans suffer from some type of allergy.
Another 25-million suffer from asthma.
With fall approaching that means your kids are going back to school during a peak season for both.
“Allergy and Asthma is a problem in west Texas year round but particularly problematic in spring and fall,” explained Allergist and Immunologist Dr. Goutam Shome.
And missing class because of those is something that no parent wants.
But when your child is facing a constant runny nose one of the biggest questions for you parents, “How do you know your symptoms are from allergies versus some viral infections,” Goutam said.
It’s a question that Dr. Shome will be answered during this year’s allergy and asthma fair.
“If you know the triggers for asthma and you can address it preemptively in a sense than you can prevent many of the severe problems,” said Shome.
That way you can learn the triggers find out treatments and avoid a trip the emergency room.
Another big issue that Dr. Shome said they will address during the fair, is what to do if the drugs you are buying over the counter aren’t working.
“Make sure these symptoms are allergy related. Two, if it allergy related we do allergy testing and find out how severe the problem is,” said Shome.
Dr. Shome said from there you can find out what else you can do on your own or even find out if you are a candidate for immunotherapy injections.
But Dr. Shome said probably the biggest perk of the fair is visitors, “will have one on one contact with our educator here. Plus they will not only get to hear from them but see what is going on in this clinic.”
Not to mention a question and answer with one of Lubbock’s most renowned allergists and immunologists.
The entire fair is free to the public.
