Texas Tech hosted an engineering camp on campus for high school students. The program gave KLBK and EverythingLubbock.com an inside look at how students are preparing for the real world.
“So you just take as many math classes and science classes so you can prepare yourself for the university level,” Lubbock High School Junior Madison Hanson said. “But here it’s nice to have people who understand what you want to go into to be able to talk about different aspects different projects that you’re interested in.”
The camp’s director Jamie Perez says students explore every degree of engineering with real-world workshops.
Monterey High School Senior Bryce Weighill said he’s learning more from the group setting the program provides.
“Where one of us is weak at, the other one is strong,” Weighill said.”And so engineering is all about being in a group of people and being able to get anyone and everyone’s thought on a subject, we just all work together and it really helps.”
Perez said the goal is for students to pursue a career in engineering and expose students to Texas Tech’s campus at the same time.
The camp is completely free but only runs once a year. Their sponsors, Texas Higher Education and ConocoPhillips Center for Engineering Enrichment and Diversity, provide the funds for their program.
