The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office and Lubbock Police Department traded in their handcuffs for serving aprons at the annual Tip-A-Cop Night, which was held at Texas Roadhouse on Thursday.

Officers, sheriff’s deputies, and Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) members were expected to wait tables and collect tips, to be turned in as donations to Special Olympics Texas at the end of the dinner shift.

Ashley Pena, the Area Director for the Special Olympics, said it was great to see unity in the community.

“Our goal for the event is about $2,500, so we are hoping we can pass that. We are really looking to get our Torch Run Officers a lot more involved this year and our athletes a lot more involved, so we are hoping we can surpass that goal,” Pena said.

LSO Sargeant Brenda Hassell said she’s been a part of SOTX since 2005.

“This event means a lot to me because there’s a lot of athletes out there that need our help, so as for the community of law enforcement we want to help the Special Olympics,” Hassell said.

All tips go toward providing SOTX programming for more than 1,200 athletes with intellectual disabilities in the South Plains area.
