One person died at the scene and two tractor trailers caught on fire after three separate crashes on Interstate 35 early Tuesday morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.
One Hyundai, and three 18-wheelers were involved in the crash around 2:18 a.m.
DPS said Alan Eduardo Dieguez, an off-duty officer with the El Paso Police Department, was driving a Hyundai at unsafe speeds when he collided with an 18-wheeler.
The Hyundai veered into a ditch causing a second truck to swerve to miss debris in the road. The second truck lost control and skidded into the northbound lanes before catching on fire. The third truck hit the debris in the road and also caught on fire.
DPS troopers shut down the northbound lanes. The main lanes have since been reopened.
Three people were transported to the Seton Medical Center.
Authorities said Dieguez was charged with driving while intoxicated. A spokesperson for the El Paso Police Department could not confirm the information provided by DPS that Dieguez was an off-duty officer.
