According to Wichita Falls Police a man accused of shooting and killing a woman last week said he only intended to fire a warning shot to prevent her from attacking him.
Robert Fleeks, 66, was charged with murder and was jailed on $500,000 bond.
Police said Helen Fletcher, 30, was shot in front of a home on 2nd Street and then staggered into the nearby parking lot of the Community Healthcare Center where she collapsed.
Fleeks was arrested Friday evening. According to an arrest warrant, Fleeks and Fletcher had been in a relationship and had been arguing.
Fleeks said Fletcher came at him with a garden tool and he fired a warning shot. Fleeks told police he did not think he had hit her, even though he said Fletcher cried out twice that she had been shot.
Fleeks told police he had thrown the gun in a nearby field, but police said officers recovered the gun in a trash dumpster near his sister’s house.
Police said a .45 caliber handgun was stuffed inside a couch pillow that came from Fleek’s house.
