Covenant Health Plainview is planning to open a state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) center which will be open for outpatient appointments in addition to providing diagnostic scanning for hospital inpatients within the next year.

“Planning and design work are scheduled to being at the end of this month,” said Bob Copeland, interim CEO of Covenant Health Plainview. “Construction could begin in late fall with opening in early 2017.”

Copeland said the new Signa HDxt delivers both remarkable image quality and high productivity.

The new system from GE Healthcare combines advanced applications and workflow improvements with a foundation of high-performance components. Its 1.5T field strength is the industry’s best known and most-used.

“The new MRI Suite is an additional part of the ongoing $40 million renovation of Covenant Health Plainview,” Copeland said. “Having an in-house MRI suite is great news for our patients and will greatly improve patient care by providing a calming patient environment with leading-edge technology.”

MRI diagnostic scanning uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In many cases, MRI gives more detailed information about structures in the body than can be seen with an X-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT) scan. Doctors may order MRI scans to help diagnose multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, torn ligaments, tendonitis, cancer and strokes, for example.

Covenant Plainview’s renovation is part of the health system’s larger Keeping the Covenant capital campaign. For more information or to donate, visit keepingthecovenant.org.
