A sign at the Slide Plant Market in Lubbock County displayed an unsavory message for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The business, owned by Mark Lee, is known by neighbors to share clever and comical posts on the signage in the past.
“I’ve got that corner, that’s my corner,” Lee said, proclaiming himself the “unofficial mayor of Slide.”
“If you can’t say what you want to say out here in the middle of a cotton field, and that’s where I am. I am in Slide, Texas. Actually I’m in Slide, America. You know, and in Slide, America we can say anything we want to say,” he said.
Some residents thought the message was another one of Lee’s funny posts, but others were not on board.
“Its [sic] no different than restaurants putting up signs stating they do not want guns in their place of business or a bakery not serving certain people.. Its [sic] all about everyones [sic] rights… Except the f-bomb…they could have left that off. But still…freedom of speech… All for it,” said Facebook user Katy Blalock.
“Everyone has an opinion, but that is tacky to bring into the work place. Everything I always read said to never discuss politics at work. Outside a home would be better than a business I would think but to each their own,” said Ashley Morris on Facebook.
“I will never shop there. Foolish and inappropriate to put on a sign. What a stupid business owner and a bad citizen of the U.S. Please keep your dumb opinions to yourself and I hope you go out of business soon as you give this city a bad name,” commented Lynn Walters.
“Didn’t know they existed but I will shop there soon,” exclaimed user Tammie Dubose.
Lee said that if people have a problem with kids seeing the profanity on his sign, they “don’t have to drive through.”
The business, located at 5456 194th Street, is well outside city limits. We put a call in to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, and were directed to the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office.
