Michael Brooks, the principal at Lubbock Roosevelt High School, said on Thursday that a student was recovering after one student put a yet-to-be identified substance on another student’s food.

“The intent was not to harm or maim anyone,” Brooks said.  “It was a practical joke gone wrong.”

The student who ate the contaminated food suffered upset stomach and vomiting, according to Brooks.  Brooks said the student is well now and does not appear to have any lasting injury or illness.

“Basically, a student put a substance on a food item that he was fairly certain another student would eat. That student ate the food, got sick, and went to the nurse.”

The nurse called administrators and an investigation was conducted.

Brooks said there was some discrepancy as to what was put on the food.  Names, ages, and details on discipline were withheld by Brooks.

“The situation was treated as incredibly serious,” Brooks said. “We are absolutely following our protocols – that includes not only the student handbook but also the code of conduct.”
