Municipal election day is on Saturday May 7, and early voting ended on May 3.
The Lubbock County Elections Office said 16,500 people voted during the nine day early voting period this year. According to the elections office website, 159,080 people are registered to vote as of May 4, 2016.
“This tops the last 6 like elections that we’ve seen the city have so we’re pretty excited that we’ve got a record here, because this is the most voters we’ve had since 2006 at a May election,” Dorothy Kennedy at the Lubbock County Elections Office said.
According to the elections office, the May 2006 election saw 16,272 people vote during early voting.
In the City of Lubbock, there are a number of items on the ballot, including the mayor’s race, districts 1, 2, and 4, as well as municipal court judge.
There is also a bond election for Lubbock-Cooper Independent School District and many school districts in the area also have school board elections.
“I hope we’re getting people excited about voting, because it is important for people to do. And we’ve got a lot, I mean this year, we seem like we’re voting all the time,” Kennedy said.
Polls are open on Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Kennedy said if any of the races need a run-off election, that will be held on Saturday, June 25.
