The former Executive Director for the Snyder Chamber of Commerce will spend at least 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to nine different child sex crime charges.
Jay Dee Burns received his sentence on Wednesday. A formal sentence hearing will take place on May 4, 2016, where more charges can be added.
A press release from District Attorney Bobby Bland reveals how the nine charges factored into Burns’ sentence. It reads, “An Ector County Jury sentenced Jay Dee Burns to 10 years in prison on each of the 4 counts of improper relationship between educator and student; 15 years in prison on each of the 3 counts of sexual assault; 15 years in prison on the 1 count of indecency with a child; and 10 years in prison on the 1 count of stalking.” The sentences will be served concurrently.
Burns pleaded guilty to these charges on Monday. He was a teacher at Permian High School in Odessa when the investigation and subsequent charges came to light.
He served in his position with the Snyder Chamber of Commerce years before this arrest.
