A resolution on the agenda for Lubbock City Council, if approved, would authorize security camera systems to be placed on Citibus para-transit vans and transit buses.
Citibus General Manager Maurice Pearl said the resolution would fund the installation of approximately 760 security cameras on the 107 buses in the fleet.
Pearl said the chief priorities were the safety of bus operators and passengers, and maintaining lower insurance costs.
“Main overall goal is safety. Want to make sure that everybody is safe in and around the vehicles, and that we, what can we do better to mitigate our costs on insurance. This is a great way to do it. They will absolutely pay for themselves within a few years,” Pearl said.
He said the project would take about three months to complete if the council approves the funding.
“The resolution for Thursday is for us to proceed in negotiating with the camera company on getting the cameras installed with what vehicles we want to install them on and what we want to start with.
“The total is just a little over $350,000. It does come equipped with a GPS system on it also, so we’ll be able to monitor the vehicles with GPS. It is paid for, a majority, by a federal grant, and then the city’s contribution to that as well,” he said.
The actual wording of the City Council agenda item reads as follows:
Resolution – Citibus: Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute contract 12631 with
Seon Systems for Citibus transit and paratransit van security camera systems, RFP 16-12631-TF.
