Fans packed into the Rip Griffin Center Monday afternoon on Lubbock Christian University’s campus to watch the Lady Chaps win the NCAA Division II Championship game.
Alumni, students, and other community members spent the afternoon together, as a community, to cheer on the Lady Chaps from the team’s home turf.
“We’re so excited,” Laura Rhodes, a junior at LCU said. “We go to classes with them, we are friends with them and they’ve just been working so hard and they just deserve to have the best game ever and have so much fun.”
Many students said they would have liked to be at the game in person, but said the watch party made it feel like they were there.
“Of course I wish I could be there, but I mean this is as good as it can get,” LCU Senior Jonathan Gomez said.
“It’s hard not to get emotional,” Dean of Student at LCU Josh Stephens said. “It’s such a crazy event and you’re happy for the community, you’re happy for the school but you’re so happy for the girls and Coach Gomez, they really deserve it, they let their light shine on and off the court, so, just overwhelmed with emotion really.”
The team is scheduled to return Wednesday and LCU said they are working out the details of how they will be welcoming the team home.
