The Lubbock Boys and Girls Club and the ABC Pro Rodeo have worked hand in hand for the last 73 years and this year the 74th is no different. Rodeo chairman Earl Bratcher says putting the rodeo together is a great feeling but it can also be tough.
It’s rewarding to see the people working together to get something accomplished and hot it’s put together and a lot of people don’t understand what goes on in the background and how much there is to putting one together and there’s a lot
One misconception about our rodeo is that it comes to Lubbock. But that’s not quite the case
The ABC Rodeo don’t come to town it lives here. We all live and work here just like everybody else does, says Bratcher.
The same can be said about this year’s Miss ABC Pro Rodeo Ralls native Makayla Arthur. She knew that being the queen was a lot of work so she started early
She started to really focus on barrel racing when she was little so she could be the rodeo queen. Arthur became the local one , the Ralls Lion’s Club queen. Once she graduated and went off to college she came back and her mom told me about the sign up and she said she was, “like wow that’s something I’ve always wanted to do i think i owe it to myself to try for it”
One of the queen’s duties actually consists of carrying the American flag in front of a packed crowd. That is something that Makayla feels honored to do
She says, “I might also have the privilege of carrying the American flag in the rodeo that’s something that’s pretty cool too while you’re out there you’re being kind of proud to support America because we’re all blessed to live here so I felt blessed to carry the flag and I’ll be more blessed to carry the flag at the ABC Rodeo.”
There is a lot of hard work that goes into putting on the ABC Pro Rodeo from dozens of local volunteers. That’s ok, because they know they’re helping area children.
Bratcher says everything we do all comes back to the kids it’s all about helping the kids has been since day one and still is
