Police have launched an investigation to a burglary of the The Matador gift shop at 98th Street and Quaker early Saturday morning.
Surveillance video showed a man breaking the window in the front door and entering the store, followed by a woman.
The man was wearing a red and black hoodie, and the woman was wearing a black tank top. Neither wore masks during the burglary, but the man appeared to have white gloves on.
Owner Steve Massengale received a call from police around 5:00 a.m. notifying him of the incident.
“It was a pretty aggressive smash and grab,” Massengale said. “Someone had broken in the front door, a couple of individuals rushed in, grabebd a fair amount of product, and left through the same opening.”
He said the burglars made off with approximately between $2,000-$3,000.
“I assume they’re going to resell it somewhere but I have no idea who it is,” Massengale explained.
Lubbock Police shared the surveillance video on Facebook, along with a message about the incident.
“Easter weekend has different meanings to everyone, but most would agree that burglary should not be the meaning,” the post said.
“We did have a burglar alarm and we have live video surveillance so that helped. I’m sure as soon as they broke the glass the alarm was going off, so that probably created a sense of urgency for these two,” Massengale said.
“It happens, and it’s unfortunate. I just think it’s important for business owners and employees to be vigilant, as well as citizens. Any time you see something suspicious, you should always report it,” he said.
Massengale said he was not only disappointed that his business was victimized, but especially because it was over the Easter holiday weekend.
“We hopefully are able to catch the perpetrators,” he said.
Massengale said he plans to prosecute the offenders to the “maximum extent of the law.”
