Monterey High School (MHS) culinary students are partnering with a new, local charity called Lubbock Street Gourmet.
The proprietors of Lubbock Street Gourmet have a food truck which they plan to use to help feed the homeless in Lubbock approximately three times per month. Kristie Storms, culinary arts teacher at MHS, said that her students are also going to help plan, cook and eventually distribute the food.
On Wednesday, March 23, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the students are also going to help decorate the truck. The food truck is painted with a chalkboard-like surface and the students will be “chalking it up” to help launch the project. The truck will be parked on the east side of the MHS campus, 3211 47 Street, in between the main building and the annex.
In addition, the MHS students will be partnering with the Lubbock Arts Festival to sell caramel corn as a fundraiser for both the culinary arts program and the food truck project. They will also perform demonstrations at the arts festival for both the culinary classes and the food truck. “The possibilities are pretty endless, so we are excited that Monterey gets to be a part of the fun,” Storms concluded.
