It was a fun-filled day for both DPS troopers and children from the Children’s Home of Lubbock Wednesday morning. DPS spoke with the children about stranger awareness, bicycle safety and how to continue their education to become successful.

The fun field day took place at the Children’s Home. Troopers were able to meet one-on-one with the children to talk to them about law enforcement and to get an inside look at what all they get to do. They also sat and ate lunch with them and gave away gifts donated to the children throughout the day.

‘This breaks the monotony for our job,” said Cpl. John Gonzalez with DPS. “A lot of times we’re dealing with wrecks, and unfortunately, people are injured or killed in those crashes. It’s just nice to have all these guys out here and enjoying something with the kids and looking at how life doesn’t end. It continues on, and we can see that through these children, these young men and women who are out here.”

Cpl. Gonzlaez says his main hope for the children through Wednesday’s field day is to inspire them to become leaders themsleves in the future.

“They can continue on and become anything they want. That’s what we want to get out there. Emphasize to the children, you know, that they can be successful as well and remind the public that they are tomorrow’s leaders.”

Troopers say they hope this event also inspires more people from the community to become foster parents or to simply get involved with the Children’s Home in some way.
