LUBBOCK, Texas — The city of Lubbock is looking for more lifeguards, after falling short of their typical amount needed to keep city pools safe.
“It may look like a glamorous job, but these life guards do amazing life-saving work day in and day out,” said OJ Williams, City of Lubbock outdoor coordinator.
Only 20 life guards have been confirmed for the summer season, 30 guards less than where they would like to be. However, officials say it’s still early in the application season, and are confident more applications will come in.
“There are so many opportunities for anyone who wants to be a guard,” Williams said. “If you like the water, if you like helping you community, and getting paid then this is the job for you.”
In order to be considered for a position you must be at least 15 years old, be able to swim 300 yards continuously, and tread water for two minutes using only your legs. The Red Cross is one of the main providers for this certification training.
“The training we give more than prepares you for what you expect on that stand,” said Deborah Finlayson, executive director of Lubbock Red Cross. “They might sit on that stand for three years, and only ever make one save, but that’s the one that we are preparing for.”
