The upcoming 2015-2016 school year will be the first year Slaton high school will be a part of the early college high school program.

This is a program that makes students eligible to take dual credit courses starting their freshman year, in a partnership with University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Students who wish to take part will have to be accepted through an application program.

A student who takes the maximum number of dual credit courses could earn as many as 60 college hours before graduating from high school.

“Those hours will transfer will transfer to any Texas public university, so that’s pretty exciting,” Slaton ISD superintendent Julee Becker said.

“It’s not something that we have to do, but it’s something that we want to do and we’re driven to do,” Becker said.

More information on the program can be found here on the Texas Education Agency website.
