LUBBOCK, TX (NEWS RELEASE) — On Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., the 100 Black Men of West Texas, Inc. (the 100), in conjunction with the Texas Game Warden’s Association, will present our 18th Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby.  This event will be held at Mae Simmons Park located at Martin Luther King Blvd. and Canyon Lakes Drive in Lubbock, Texas. The 100, along with the Texas Game Warden’s Association will stock the lake with over 1,000 pounds of catfish just prior to the event; however, it’s up to the participants to catch the fish.  Since loaner fishing rods and reels are very limited, we encourage all parents and youths to bring their own fishing gear.

Also, bait will be issued for free until the supply runs out.  Therefore, like the old cliché goes, – “get there early since the early birds will literally get the worms” says the 100’s Vice President, Reggie Dial.  Reggie goes on to explain the impact of this annual event by saying: “In this age of enhanced technology where kids are obsessed with computer games and apps, television, social media – all with instant gratification, it’s refreshing to offer an outdoor activity that moves the child out the house into a family friendly environment and teaches a skill which requires patience.”  The 100’s Fishing Derby Founder & Chairman Emeritus, Rev. Charles Hankson points out that this annual citywide fishing derby is just one way that the 100 gives back to our community, encourages family togetherness, and demonstrates to the children that we love them and care about them.  The 100 envisioned this fishing event some nineteen years ago from the premise that “If you give them a fish, they’ll eat for a day. But if you teach them to fish, they’ll eat for a lifetime.”    

In addition to fishing, there will be face painting, free food, and free soft drinks for everyone in attendance.  Additionally, prizes will be issued to boys and girls in specific age categories who catch the most fish, the largest fish, and the most unique catch.  We encourage everyone to come out and partake in a great family- fun event.
