As early voting begins for the March primary election, there’s a new sign visible at Lubbock County voting locations, reminding people that guns are not permitted inside voting locations.
This is not something that’s new, according to Lubbock County Elections Administrator Dorothy Kennedy.
“Texas Penal Code 46.03 has always been that you cannot concealed carry in a building where voting is going on, whether that be early voting or election day,” Kennedy said.
There will be a new sign visible to voters at each of the voting locations, reminding people of the law.
“So if you can imagine any of our buildings, whether they be our retail outlets or any of our county buildings, our elections office, when voting is going on, during hours of voting, a bubble kind of goes over the entire building. And no guns are allowed, or weapons, concealed or open carry on the guns, unless you are a licensed peace officers,” Kennedy said.
For some voting locations, there may be multiple entrances to the building. Kennedy said even if you’re going to a voting location for another purpose, this applies during voting hours.
“Whether you’re coming in the entrance where the voting is actually occurring, or your going into another entrance, it covers the entire building,” Kennedy said.
Early voting runs from February 16 to 26 and election day is on March 1 for this primary election.
