Evacuations have been ordered near the Callahan County community of Eula after a grass fire erupted in the area Saturday morning.
The Clyde, Eula, Baird and Potosi Volunteer Fire Departments, along with the Abilene Fire Department are currently on scene battling the blaze.
Residents tell BigCountryHomepage.com that they received the alert to evacuate their homes around 11:00 a.m Saturday.
There are reports the fire is visible from Abilene. The fire has been dubbed the ‘High Line Fire” by officials.
One person has been transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, according to the Callahan County Sheriff’s Office. Evacuees are being directed to the Eula High School
The Red Cross is setting up at the First Baptist Church in Clyde and the Highway 36 Church of Christ. They will be opening at 6 p.m. Saturday.
A spark from an electrical pole off County Road 224, south of Eula, is believed to have caused the fire, according to the Callahan County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire has been spreading northward due to gusty winds and the dry conditions. Areas impacted include those along Farm-to-Market Road 603 between Eula and State Highway 36.
The fire has spread to 120 acres, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Firefighters battling the blaze have made progress and report about 10 percent of the blaze to be contained. A number of structures have been lost, but no official number has been released.
