New filed bills in New Mexico aren’t sitting well with multiple sheriffs across the state. That includes Lea County Sheriff Corey Helton.

“The 29 sheriffs across the state believe they are overreaching and unconstitutional,” said Helton.

While there are numerous bills, two that stick out are Senate Bill 8 and House Bill 83. The former focuses on background checks for firearm sales. The latter looks at red flag laws, which allow the seizure of firearms from people who are considered an imminent threat.

Recent mass shootings across the country reignited the gun control controversy. However Sheriff Helton says the bills are looking past the true problem.

“It’s mental health there is no doubt about that. It all tugs at our heart strings to see these shootings every night. But you cant tackle these problems on the backs of these law abiding citizens,” Helton said.

Sheriff Helton believes that many Lea County citizens are also in support of the Second Amendment, whether right or left.

“There is no splitting hairs in Lea County. They are all in or nothing. You know this is an attack on the Constitution, you know, plain and simple,” said the sheriff.
