Jung Named Unanimous First Team All-American

Texas Tech baseball’s Josh Jung was named to the 2019 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) First Team All-America list, the publication announced today.

It’s the fifth first team honor for Jung, making the junior from San Antonio, Texas, a unanimous preseason first team selection. He was also honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (CBN) in December, Perfect Game in early January, D1 Baseball two weeks ago and Baseball America last week. Jung is one of four players in the nation to earn unanimous first-team selections.

Sophomore teammate Gabe Holt was also selected to the NCBWA list as a third-team outfield honoree. It is Holt’s third honor during the preseason as he also received a nod by CBN and D1 Baseball.

The Red Raiders have now collected nine preseason All-America accolades entering the 2019 season with junior pitcher Caleb Kilian adding a second team honor from CBN.

The awards come a day after the NCBWA ranked Tech No. 3 in their preseason poll. Five out of six preseason polls had the Red Raiders slotted in the top-five entering the season.

Jung put together a phenomenal sophomore campaign in 2018 as he led the Big 12 in several offensive categories, including batting (.392 avg.), hits (103) and RBI (80). His hit total finished third nationally while his RBI total ranked fourth in the country. Jung also totaled 12 home runs, 17 doubles, a team-leading six triples and 69 runs scored in 2018.

Holt, a Bonaire, Georgia, native was the school’s first unanimous Freshman All-American in school history last season after totaling 94 hits to rank 11th in the country and 70 runs scored to rank No. 10 and lead the Big 12.

Coming off their third College World Series appearance in five seasons, the Red Raiders are set to open the 2019 campaign on Friday, Feb. 15, against Oregon at 2 p.m. from Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
