The last day of 2018 is going out as a somewhat cloudy, yet seasonable day. Today will feature a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures reaching the low to mid 50s. However, things will be changing heading into 2019 as a strong cold front arriving tonight will drop our temperatures back into the 20s and 30s. New Year’s Eve night looks like it’s going to be a chilly and breezy one so be sure to bundle up. Temperatures at midnight will be in upper 20s but with the northeasterly wind breezing at 15 to 20 mph it’ll feel more like the teens throughout the South Plains. So be sure to wear layers, a hat, gloves, and a scarf.
2019 starts off well below average with highs only reaching the upper 20s to low 30s across much of the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Be sure to bundle up tomorrow as well as feels like temperatures will be in the single digits in the morning hours and the teens by the afternoon. The first day of 2019 remains dry, but then we’ll be watching our next chance for a wintry mix on Wednesday as an upper-level low moves across Texas. This upper-level low will bring a chance for snow, sleet, and some freezing rain across the region. Accumulations look to be light to near nothing here in Lubbock, with the possibility of seeing up to two inches in New Mexico and parts of the northwest South Plains.
After Wednesday, things clear out and dry out and temperatures rise back into the 50s to 60s by the end of the week and into the weekend.
Happy New Year and stay warm!
