The New Deal Lions took a perfect 15-0 record into their 2A Division One State Championship game against the Mason Punchers with hopes of bringing home some hardware to the South Plains. Instead it was the Punchers defense dictating the flow of the game from the onset as Mason beat New Deal 44-6. The Lions came within a point of the Punchers in the first half after a botched punt attempt by Mason set up New Deal inside the Punchers 20 yard line. Quarterback Jett Whitfield was able to connect with Kendall Dunn to cut a 7-0 Mason lead to 7-6. The Punchers reeled off 34 unanswered in route to their second consecutive title. Coach Matt Hill very proud of what this Lions team was able to accomplish. “These seniors… What else can they talk about? When they talk about new deal football for the next 25 years they are gonna talk about them.”
