October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
And Covenant Health teams up with a number of local organizations to get women, children, or men the help they need if they’re in an abusive relationship.
“If they’re coming here as a result of some kind of domestic violence, our role is to try and make sure they’re getting the medical care that they need,” said Char Rantz, a case manager at Covenant Health.
Rantz’s department is made up of nurses and case workers trained to notice the signs of domestic abuse.
“Signs like they might be isolating themselves, they might be here alone, they don’t have any family contacts they want to give you, they might have a spouse who answers all their questions for them, or have unexplained injuries and can’t tell you why they’re here,” Rantz explained.
A lot of victims don’t know what services are available or where they can go for help, that’s where Covenant steps in to help.
They partner with Women’s Protective Services, Voice of Hope, and Lubbock Impact to point victims in the right direction.
“We’re trying to be a continuum from the time they walk in the door until they leave to what they’re going to need when they get home,” Rantz said. “There’s always someone who can help and get you connected to some services so people can be safe.”
