Fire crews spent Monday morning battling flames and smoke at a mobile home park near University Avenue and 114th Street. The residents are now without a home.

The homeowner’s mother, Sandra Montoya, said they won’t be able to repair the damage.

“Of course, they’ve lost everything,” Montoya said.

The fire started around 7:30 a.m. Monday. There were no reported injuries.

The Lubbock Fire Department said officials are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.

“[I think] it’s something electrical, they’re thinking in the ceiling, they’re still working on it,” Montoya said.

Firefighters entered the home to extinguish the fire, but they determined they were not safely able to put the interior fire out. Instead, they focused on putting out the fire from outside the trailer.

Montoya says her grandson had to get out of the home through a window.

“My son and his wife live in the trailer and my grandson, Jeremy. I was still in bed and my son comes running and says call 911,” Montoya said. “My grandson, he tried opening his door but the fire came at him, and they had to get him out through a window.”

The damage from the fire left Montoya’s son, his wife and their child without a home. Montoya said for some time, they’ll have to move into her place next door.

“I guess it’s still kind of dangerous. They’re thinking about gutting it out, just tearing it down,” Montoya said.

She said they had just renovated the home, but everything was lost in the fire.

“He just remodeled that trailer, he put flooring down, brand new flooring, pulled the cabinets out, put new cabinets in,” Montoya said.
