One person was injured in what police said started as a fight Monday night near 59th Street and Avenue P.
Gunshots were heard in the area of 1600 59th Street around 9 p.m. Monday, according to the Lubbock Police Department.
A 43-year-old male was seriously injured and transported to University Medical Center, police said.
The victim’s injuries were not caused by a gunshot, according to police.
“Through an initial investigation, it appears two males got into a physical altercation. During the altercation, the 43-year-old male was hit multiple times with a wooden object. Originally, callers said they heard shots fired in the area. Preliminary information indicates a person fired multiple shots into the air to possibly break up the fight,” police said.
The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, police said, and the case remains under investigation.
